Case Study

The problem that needed solving

National Ag Moree needed a solution to run an auger without relying on a tractor. They wanted something highly mobile, efficient, and reliable that wouldn't require the cost and bulk of a large tractor.

What do you do with an auger but no tractor

Our client was looking for a way to move and operate the auger without needing to transport a tractor—a more versatile, compact option that could handle multiple tasks at a fraction of the cost of a tractor.

The Solution

Since no suitable off-the-shelf product existed, New England Hydraulics and Diesel (NEHD) stepped in to design and fabricate a hydraulic system that could take the place of a tractor.

“We’ve built Power Packs before, both petrol/diesel and electric. In this case, the client needed a petrol-powered pack, which required a different motor and pump configuration from our standard specification. The system needed to be large enough to provide the necessary oil flow and pressure for the job. The NEHD Petrol Power Pack we developed is highly mobile and very versatile,” said Aran Toovey, Director, New England Hydraulics and Diesel.

The NEHD Petrol Power Pack is not only mobile, eliminating the need for a $100,000 tractor to run it, but it’s also multi-purpose. It can be used for more than just an auger—it’s versatile enough to power a log splitter, wool press, hydraulic press, hydraulic cattle yards, water pump, air seeder fan, basically anything that required hydraulic fluid power.

How challenging was it to find a solution?

“Ultimately, it turned out to be a fairly straightforward request,” Aran explained. “We just had to fine-tune the product to fit the application and appropriately size the motor, pump and oil tank. It’s a matter of getting the ratios right to suit the job.

All fabrication was handled in-house by the NEHD team. Ryan Kennedy, Fitter Machinist, led the assembly fabrication. “It was really about paying attention to detail to ensure everything worked together seamlessly,” Ryan added.

Outcome and Client Experience

“I was extremely satisfied with the petrol Power Pack that New England Hydraulics and Diesel developed—it did exactly what our customer needed,” Dylan from National Ag shared. “In fact, I was so impressed, I ordered a second one to run the augers we sell in our workshop to save having a tractor sitting around.”

Since this project, New England Hydraulics and Diesel has completed a similar project for a client who had been sold an unsuitable product. This time, another auger, the solution still required the use of a tractor, but New England Hydraulics and Diesel ensured the system was properly configured to meet the client’s specific needs.

Basically, our customer was sold an auger that was too big for his tractor to run. We consulted the supplier to check the oil flow and pressure required, then built a hydraulic power pack that was run by the customer’s Case tractor. We used the tractors PTO to rotate the hydraulic pump and mounted the pump with a 3:1 drive gearbox, the tank and valve to a carryall. This unit is mobile, versatile and cost effective.
